One warning about donation rooms, their code is slightly defective.
You can take a weapon from a donation room or a piece of armor and try
wielding a weapon or wearing a piece of armor and get told you can't
use that yet.

can't use won't be helpful at all.
So once you take, try wielding or wearing and see if that works. If it
doesn't you can donate the item again and move on.
The shops need more gold than you're now likely to have so until you
get yourself a good bank balance you'll probably do well to only go in
them and check out items. You can compare an item you're interested
in in a shop without buying it. As you gain levels and skills as a
thief buying very often will really become optional.
