Hi thom. I personally am an exploration nut, so I love the idea of going through a game and finding all the hidden items etc, ----- this is one of the things that interests me about Monti.
As a fairly huge fan of the mega man series, I take the point about complex game elements like vanishing ledges, cunning bosses etc, but other aspects, finding hidden items and power ups (sometimes many of them), and the associated weapons management etc, ------ can make things very! complex, take the weapons in even the early Mega man games for example. there are games like Metroid and Turrican that have truly huge mazes, and take hours to complete. while the vertical axis in such games might be rather complicated to reproduce in audio, I think something with a more structured layout such as Castlevania or the later Prince of persia games would be very easy to do I think. You could also use doors, as in Marrio brothers 2 or some of the Kirby games to expand the amount of area available to the player and make things more nazelike. while you can certainly have these sorts of elements in Fps games as well, I personally like the way they've been employed in side scrollers and would love to see them made accessible if possible, of course, as I'm 24 and have very much grown up playing Metroid, Castlevania etc, I'm probably biased in my game choice (though I never really cared what people thought of me anyway). Btw, as far as randomness goes, many side scrollers, ----- like some fps games, have random placement of miner enemies. also, I believe some more modern side scrollers explored the idea of randomly generated levels, ----- such as some sections of Mega man X 6 on the Playstation, though how successfull these were I don't know. while something like original super mario bross probably doesn't have much room for replay value, as with games like Sarah and Shades, exploration eleements, and finding the best path have always provided a lot of replay value for me. all the best, Dark. _______________________________________________ Gamers mailing list ..
