Are you getting enough gold for training? Have you built a Barracks? They only give you 2 footmen, an archer and a peasant to start out with, you have to work your way up from there. I recommend making another peasant, and taking one east and the other west, each with a footman to guard them. Have one exploit a gold mine and the other chop some wood. Once you've got enough, have them both come together on whichever side you can find a medow on and build a barracks. I recommend then recruiting two more peasants and having two each on both gold mine and wood. Once you have enough, grab another footman or build a saw mill, whichever you feel like doing first. Then even out your footman and archers so you ahve 3 of each and you should be fine. Its better to head the enemy off before they get to your buildings, by the way. The computer always attacks in patterns, at least during the chapters.
