Say you have a baracks at e1 and want 5 footmen to be recruited and to patrol C1, which is 2 squares to the left. You have enough resources to recruit 5 footmen. So you could press w until you control baracks 1, then shift a to select the order "raly to", then select c1 with the arrow keys and press enter. You could focus yourself on more important things from now on, and just order the baracks to order 5 footmen. They would automatically go to c1. You won't have to issue the order to each of them and you can use the saved time to control your peasants to build a sawnyl, for example.
