I really cannot recommend using a mouse or joystick enough for Rail Racer,
I know lots of people drive with the keyboard and love it, but once you get
used to the mouse there is no going back.
One reason for this is the ability to control your acceleration better.
Instead of holding down the decellerate key and waiting, with the mouse or
joystick, you can pull back ahrd and get some pretty serious drop off in
speed pretty quickly, with some practice the timing will become instinctual.
Just like real racing, Rail Racer takes practice to become proficient, but
being able to make your friends eat your digital dust online is well worth
it.
  Later,
  Che
