I just want to let everyone know that I resolved the problem. most installers looks for the folder where windows is installed and offer that as the default folder for installation, but the installer for the sl demo doesn't do that; it assumes that windows is installed on the c drive, so because I'm used to installers detecting the folder where windows is installed I accepted the default folder and then later I noticed that the game was installed on the c drive and that is not where windows is installed. So I uninstalled the game and installed it again and made sure it was installed on the d drive and the game works.
