Hi,
As far as I recall the only files that are missing for the Draconis
games to work were the DX7VB.dll and the DX8VB.dll libraries. That is
because after DirectX 9.0C came out Microsoft's DirectX department
decided to drop all support for Visual Basic 6 games and applications.
So those libraries were removed from the installation and DirectX upgrades.
Microsoft has announced that in 2008 they will begin dropping support
for Visual Basic 6 for other types of applications as well. It is
unclear if they will pull os support away from Vista right away with
Vista SP1, or if they will pull them when the next Windows os comes out.
In either case sticking with Visual Basic 6 as a programming language
isn't an exactly wize move if you plan to carry your games and apps over
to Vista and beyond.
It's too bad that most blind developers baught into Visual Basic 6 lock
stock and barrel, and are faced with the concept of either upgrading,
sticking with VB 6 until it dies, or abandoning the older games when
support is no longer possible.
I don't believe all this is going to happen over night, but time will
eventually make these VB 6 apps very old and out dated as Microsoft
moves on to newer and newer technologies. the only question is when not if.
