Hi Mark,
Let me try and explain this in as simple language as possible without
stering up the old arguments on list on which way is the right way to
setup your system for playing these games. Allot of average computer
users are not aware that Windows 2000, XP, and Vista have three
different type of user account options.
One of these is called administrator. The administrator type account
allows users to install programs, access the registries, change global
preferences for the computer, etc. Basically, as administrator there is
very few restrictions, and the main reasons Microsoft highly recommends
not using an admin type account for day to day use.
The second option is the standard user account option. This type of
account is much more secure, but restricts you from doing global
changes, installing programs to secured locations such as Program Files,
and can help stop viruses and other malware from damaging your computer
system. This is the recommended account type for users by Microsoft, but
most users aren't that security conscious to configure a standard
account for every day use, and only use the admin account for emergency
or setup only purposes.
Finally, there is also an account called guest. No hhome user has one of
these by default, but it allows any user to log in with a guest under
restricted access. However, since we are not a business requiring this
special account type I won't say much more about it.
Under Windows Vista there is an additional security layer called User
Account Control. Because Microsoft discovered through years of tech
support that 99% of the average users were running administrator
accounts with open access they had to find a way to secure the admin
account from newby and idiot users who basically used their computer
systems with no security features enabled, and then called up Microsoft
complaining that their systems got whiped out by hackers, viruses, and
other garbage software. As a result with Windows Vista User Account
Control will attempt to varify the publisher of the application. If the
application attempts to access the admin account or is not from a
trusted source it will prompt the user to confirm or cansel the
applications operation.
In the case of BSC's games like Pipe and Troopenum neither application
properly varifies themselves with Windows Vista, and it crashes User
Account Control. The solution is to bypass UAC by arrowing to the icon
of the game, press the context menu key, arrowing to run as
administrator, you will be prompted to elivate your security
authorisation, and then the game will run with no restrictions.
