Hi, Actually, it is better than that. Around year 2000 or so ID Software released the quake 1 engine as open source as well as the quake pak file format. The only thing that wasn't open sourced was the pak file containing the graphics and sounds. However, anyone hosting the link to the source code usually has a link to the sounds and graphics as well. I am suspecting the open source nature of the Quake engine is how Michael was able to do all the modifications he did to Quake.
