Hi Matthew. The problem with Z code stuff is that game files just get dumped up on the If archive with no information at all.
this site lists some good games for beginners at If, along with descriptions, though bare in mind some of these games are tads http://www.microheaven.com/IFGuide/IFGuide.pl?step=6&c=0 there are some sites such as baff's guide to the If archive, found at http://www.wurb.com/if/ which list the games along with reviews, but generally I found it best to find an author or genre section of games I enjoyed and go from there. Being as I'm a fan of slightly surreal fantasy and Sf, I enjoyed the games by andrew plotkin, Paul Obrian and emily short, along with games like Gini chronicals and Babel, but as I said this is merely my personal opinion given the sort of genre I like, and you might be different.
