Hi, Yes, the original story, The Jungle Book, was written by Rudyard Kipling in 1894. As for its copyright status I just checked and the original book is in the public domain. In fact, a quick check of the Project Gutenberg site shows a public domain free ASCII text copy of The Jungle Book. That said, even though the title, characters, etc is in the public domain later adaptations such as those made by Disney are copyrighted. For example, while you can legally create a game called The Jungle Book incorperating all the major characters you still can't use any of the music from the Disney film. Songs like Bare Necessities remain a copyright held and owned by Disney because it is an adaptation of the Jungle Book and not an original work.
