Hi Phil Indeed what you say about the start makes sense. I'd think the mode should be put after the start game option. That way people won't wonder why start game doesn't do anything if you haven't chosen a mode yet.

I got the main menu working and first hit the start game which did not work. I then realized that you need to pick your mode first before playing the game. It would be better if you added the mode choice after hitting the play game choice. Or if no mode is chosen, tell the player that you need to choose your mode before playing the game. I did not get too far on my first try but appreciate the sounds and interface as challenging but not impossible to deal with. I would like to have a little louder jet engine sound or possibly have a ear plug toggle to turn the jets sound down if necessary.
