It depends on what you want to do. I played Hyborian War several times, and
loved the game. It's definitely a commercial game, though. It's set in the
world of Conan, and you play one of the many nations of the word, trying to
meet your victory conditions.

On the other hand, I've played chess through the mail, and that was fun, and
absolutely free.

A third option are the Diplomacy servers. They let you play on-line
Diplomacy, which is an absolutely cool conquest/political game. PBM
Diplomacy had its origins in snail mail gaming, but I'm not sure any snail
mail Diplomacy remains.

If there is some, you may be hard-pressed to find it for free, as any snail
mail PBM game costs at least a little bit to run.

Another option would be to play a role-playing game through the mail, with
one of you acting as storyteller and the other as player. Perhaps these
roles could change from time to time, so that both of you would have a
chance to play.

Just a few thoughts.

Subject: [Audyssey] Any Snail Mail games?

has anyone up here ever played any snail mail games?
often called play by mail games?
I wish to do something like this with a sighted friend who I will be writing
to long distance for the next few years.
I tried to google this but got thousands of hits..and the little I read over
seemed to be all commercial games.
I am looking for something that is free.
thanks
Robert
