No, no special software required, just the ability to read text files or internet pages, ---- and some rollable dice (the gma dice program helps.

As to where to get the books, well various places.

From that list I'd personally highly recommend the Fighting fantasy project
(easy to handle as the website will roll dice for you), and particularly the Chronicles of Arborell, ---- which imho has some of the best writing of a text game ever!
