Yup what Dark said, as well as figuring out how to use jumping to your advantage. Evading attacks from some creatures with jumps and using them to get yourself either right into the thick of a big group or in some cases back out again will go a long way toward your energy lasting longer. As well as timing the use of them right, make sure you're as offensive as possible when you've got a shield activated so you're using them to their full potential.
