Have you checked into the correspondence courses on how to play chess at
www.hadley.edu
yet? Although you said that you do know the game, here's why I suggest this
option. I knew the game, but learned from a terrible player. I was tired
of always losing to people. I heard about the two chess courses offered by
Hadley, so took the first one just for kicks, thinking that what I needed
was a new beginning or a different way to think about the game. The first
chess course, for beginners, gave me a different outlook on the game, plus,
a very nice chess set was included as part of the course material. Once you
complete the course, you can keep the course material and the chess set,
which is a very nice one. Then, I enrolled in the course of advanced
tactics and strategies, which was a big, big help in improving my game. The
cost cannot be beat, as there is no charge for either course. The material
from both courses was adapted from a book written by a Grand Master of the
game. They are a great reference source for the future, too, and you keep
them after completion of the courses. You also, upon completion of the
advanced course, receive a two year membership to the United States Braille
Chess Association, which has a small library of chess books you can borrow,
as well as an Email list through which you can challenge others in games for
fun or in tournaments, as well as online in voice chat sessions.
Based on my own experiences, I think that this is a very good way for anyone
interested in chess to either get started or to improve.

If you use Kchess I'd suggest reading the tips there, it offers a game
commentary which can be quite handy.
I do remember a book called chess for tigers, which was both helpful, and
rather fun (sinse it was written using jungle animals as examples). the
author was a grand master, but I can't recall which unfortunately, ----
wikipedia will have an artical though.
Unfortunately though, generally the only way to get better at chess is to
lose a lot, then try to think why you lost.
I'm afraid that's all I can suggest for the time being, but iadmit I
haven't
played serious chess for quite a long time now.
Beware the grue!
Dark.
