well the spear is quite effective, so is the sword.
Though you can stay crouched and attack rather than having to aquire
a target first.
I was never that successfull.
pluss you need to uncrouch to get weapons switched.

hmmm yeah.
I do think the spear is quite a good weapon if you can find it.
Actually any big blade is good.
Guns against the boss monsters don't do much at all and you don't
have time to chop and change.
You may have a better chance if bosses did not have ranged weapons
but if they do well.
