It depends on how quickly you're pressing the arrows. If you press
them slowly I've found you actually need to hit it 4 times to get to
the bonus level. And remember the trick that if you hit escape
directly after dying, you can resume your game without losing a life.

If I remember rightly, it's the 2nd pit not the first one that has the
bonus
level in it.
Bryan actually wrote a pretty good guide on this, maybe looking there will
