If you're in the beginning of level one then walking right would bring you
to a firepit to jump over. Beyond tat is a room with a swinging rope. You
first need to climb down said rope and explore the several rooms to the left
of it and pulling the lever you'll find before making your way back up the
rope. From there head back left across the firepit until you come to a
staircase going up. Hope tis helps.

How do I get around level 1? I walk until I hear, looks like a dead in.
Then I try walking the other direction. Then I hear the same thing. So
