Hi again everyone.
Well as promised here is an update on the Atari 2600 emulator for Android.
Unfortunately the news is not all that good although not entirely hopeless.
I of course got the app from the google playstore and it ran me 3 bucks. I
downloaded and installed it, made sure my roms were in place on my sd card
and started the emulator. Now for the bad news. Like these emulators on
just about any system once you actually get into the emulator any
accessibility tools you are using are not going to work at all.
Furthermore, trying to open a rom directly from the Android equivalent of
Windows explorer did not achieve anything useful. This is actually how I
use Stella on my desktop pc as that too is inaccessible once you start it
and I was hoping to do something similar with this one. After trying to get
the thing going for a few minutes I reluctantly got my money back from the
Playstore.
I have written to the developer and explained the problem and asked if he
has any ideas on how to at least get roms up and running. He has not
responded to me as yet so this project is on hold for now.
So, that's where this stands at the moment, if I had been willing to not get
the 3 bucks back I might have fooled with the program for longer, however
Google in their infinite wisdom has limited the time you can get a refund to
15 minutes which does not give you much time to fool around. If there are
any further updates to this I will let you guys know.
Game on.

Subject: mobile games was Re: [Audyssey] the touch screen of i devices - Re:
LWorks
Hi all.
I have no problem with the touch screne interface however I do still prefer
a real keyboard for extensive typing both on my Droid4 and my Ipad.
As for mobile games, I saw a review of gaming on mobile devices on G4
recently and their consensus was that, with a few exceptions most games for
things like iphones and ipads and Android devices are generally designed for
quick gaming on the go, you are not going to see these deep complex games
that you are going to spend hours and hours playing. Rather they are going
for the people who want to play something for ten minutes or 20 minutes and
then put it back down for a while.
As I said there are exceptions to this but I do agree with their assessment
from what I've seen of mobile gaming so far. Their conclusion was that if
you want more in depth complex games on a mobile platform you are better off
with something like one of the Nintendo or Sony portable systems.
This is not to say that mobile games are bad, it simply depends on what your
gaming tastes happen to be. Myself I am usually looking for something to
play while I am sitting at a bus stop or on a bus or train or during other
downtime. So I actually can enjoy something fairly simple like Hearstrike
or Naval Combat. If I want something a little closer to a console
experience I can always get out my psp which I usually have with me.
One thing I intend to buy from the Google playstore probably this weekend is
an Atari 2600 emulator, it is based on the Stella emulator so should
hopefully work pretty well. They only want around 3 bucks for it so it's
definitely worth the risk. This is one situation where having both the
touch screne and a hardware keyboard is going to be pretty necessary, I am
pretty sure that playing the old games trying to use just the touch screne
would be very difficult for us to manage if we could do so at all. I will
let you guys know how this emulator works out.
Game on.
