Hey Lori, I haven't been following this thread all that closely, so someone might've already suggested this, but there is a way to launch the safely remove hardware window manually that doesn't involve using the button in the system tray.
Go to your start menu, choose run, paste this line of jibberish and hit enter: RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll If that works and the safely remove hardware window turns out to be helpful, it'd be easy enough to make a shortcut that launches it, and you could pick a keystroke to get you there too.
