huh. I did what I suggested with the folders, maybe actually what you did. And I have no problem using the Window Eyes mouse pointer to read the window. Maybe it's just an issue between screen readers..

Hi Keith, and all,

Thanks Keith for your suggestion which lead me to the solution. It didn't
quite work on my system in exactly the way you described, but a near
variation on your suggestion did, so thanks. I had to move the DX Files and
the VI executable file up two levels above the original install location.

So using your suggestion, I managed to get the program running in VI
Compatibility mode using the executable with that in the name. I've deleted
the other. This is an improvement on before when running this file just
caused a window to flash up briefly and then close. So now the game window
is staying open.

However, the fun continues...

When the Dos box window opens, and when ever there is a screen change, JAWS reads out the contents of the window once. But I am still unable to get the
JAWS cursor to review the content of the screen. When I switch to JAWS
cursor and try moving it around, JAWS still says "blank" everywhere I go.

Good news is that I have now discovered a work around for this. After some
fiddling about, I found that I could place the contents of the Dos box
window into the JAWS virtual viewer using the JAWS keystroke Insert Alt W.
I can then read the content of the screen using the virtual cursor in the
virtual viewer. In order to return to the game to enter commands, I press
escape to dismiss the virtual viewer which causes focus to be returned to
the Dos Box.

This is a fiddly but manageable work around. Hopefully, anyone else
experiencing this problem might find this hint useful.

If anyone had this problem but has found a way of making the contents of the
Dos Box readable directly using the JAWS cursor, I'd be interested to know
how you did it so I don't have to use the virtual viewer to act as an
intermediary between JAWS and the Dos box.

When I was researching the problem, I did see some old email threads from a
few years ago which indicated that Frank the developer was aware that some
screen reader users were experiencing this difficulty, and that he thought
it was due to the type of font this particular Dos Box is displaying the
text in. There was a suggestion that he was considering re-writing a new
more accessible dos box, or packaging the game with a different Dos box, to
over come this. But that was from a few years back.

Anyway, thanks Keith for helping get me up and running, and if anyone else
has any ideas, I'd still be interested to hear.

Cheers

Phil

I ran into something similar to this. Here is the remedy I found that works
for me.

Go to the folder that you extracted the .zip file to. Open that folder.
You will then be in a folder containing 1 folder. Hit enter on that
folder. You will then be inside a folder containing both the .exe files and
1 folder. hold the control key and the letter A key to select all files.
then hold down the control key and hit the x key to cut the files.
push and hold the alt key and hit the left arrow key to back out of that
folder. then, hold the control key and hit the letter V to paste the files
into the folder. Then hit enter on the .exe file with the VI in the title

This will start the adventure. Make sure you hit the Y key to use VI mode
and X to confirm.

You can delete the .exe file that does not have VI in the name of it.

Subject: [Audyssey] Eamon Stand-Alone Not working

Hi List,

I wonder if someone out there can help me out with an Eamon related
problem.
Having been encouraged through the positive comments on this list to try
some text adventure games (Zork, Humbug and most recently, Worlds Apart)
and
having enjoyed them all, I thought I'd give Eamon a go. It looks to be a
lot of fun, but I've been unable to get it to work.

I'm running Win XP SP3 on a Dell Dimension desktop PC, with JAWS v12 and
NVDA as my two screen readers.

I have downloaded the "A Runcible Cargo" stand alone Eamon adventure,
copied
the zip archive to a folder on my hard disc, and unzipped it. As has
already been said, this creates one folder, inside which is a further
folder
called DX_Files and two Runciple Cargo executable files.

The two executable files are called "A Runcible Cargo.exe" and "A Runcible
Cargo (VI MODE).exe".

With all other programs closed except basic system utilities and my screen
reader, I have tried running both files. Running "A Runcible Cargo (VI
MODE).exe" appears to flash up some sort of DOS box or command prompt for
a
brief moment, but nothing further happens. Executing "A Runcible
Cargo.exe"
appears to start the program in a window called "untitled".

I have then pressed Y followed by X to select and confirm VI compatibility
mode, and I believe that this is taking effect.

However, here's the problem. Neither JAWS nor NVDA can read anything from
within the program's "untitled" window. This is what I get when I try:

- With JAWS: using the JAWS cursor to review the content of the "untitled"
window, JAWS just says "blank" where ever I move the JAWS cursor to. The
only place this is sometimes different is when reading the title bar, when JAWS will sometimes (but not always) read the word "untitled" and then the minimise, maximise and close graphics in the top right of the window. But
nothing else is spoken at all.

- With NVDA: when I press Ins numpad 7 to bring the flat review cursor to
the PC cursor, I get the message that there is no flat review object for
this window. When I try and move through the object hierarchy I am told
there is no container and I am unable to progress through any objects.

I understand of course that this game operates in a DOS box so that all
screen content needs to be read using the JAWS / flat review cursor, not
the
PC cursor, and that clicking text in the window doesn't work.

I have tried cycling between full screen mode and a standard DOS Box sized
window using alt enter and the result is the same in both instances.

I have tried removing the installed files and re-creating them from the
zip
archive, and then running the two executables in a different order, using
both JAWS and NVDA, but again, the result is the same.

I have also followed the same process on an Acer TravelMate 4100 laptop
also
running Win XP SP3 and JAWS 12 and NVDA, but have obtained exactly the
same
problem - neither screen reader can read anything from within the program
window even when VI Compatibility Mode has been enabled.

In short, nothing I do elicits any usable output from the program's dos
Box
window.

I've read the 13 page user documentation available on the Eamon Deluxe
website but this provides no guidance as to what the problem might be.

Does anyone have any idea what might be going wrong, or what I could do to
try and fix it?

Really grateful for any help. I've been playing with this for a couple of
days with absolutely no joy and I'm now out of ideas.

Cheers

Phil
