Well first try chat in game, particularly on the newbie channel, that's a
great place to look.
As regards finding things, use the nearby and where am i commands, and take
note of what the game says about where you have explored and where not. Also
bare in mind what it says about the directio ns, they are straight! i can't
remember if you can get to the alchemists' tower from the junkyard or
whether you need to go around it to the south, though most roads are well
marked if you look at the signs.
As to finding quest objects, well the shrew is a pain. I believe someone has
to do the evil theft version of that quest for it to work, but nobody seems
to, or at least I couldn't complete it either for that reason despite
beating up that shrew (who was surprisingly tough!).
No idea why you couldn't find that shaman though if your talking about the
one near the pelham encampment in the newbie area on slo, I remember him
being fairly easy to find actually.
there's a pretty good beginners guide to that quest on the aa website for
future reference.

Subject: [Audyssey] alter aeon, can I get some directions...?
Hi I'm on a quest in Alter Aoen, and I cna't figure out how to locate the
alchemist's tower. When I headed to the junkyard, I heard it was either
northwest or northeast of the junkyard, but when I got a quest that I need
to go to the tower, I cannot locat eit. Kind of mind boggling, this game.
I should have kept notes while I was wandering around. I found a menhir
circle with druids, but cannot for the life of me find it again.
Is there a blog or what not that has a place where I can ask this sort of
thing without irritating too many people? It's like when I was sent to
look for a shrew. I found the shrew, but the quest has not finished.
Same thing with trying to find the shaman. I guess it's just wone of the
adventure things in A A.
