Keith, There's a lot of people who have gone through that area and been able to do the chess quests, but quite frankly it's not simple. It's considered a 'very difficult' quest, and most of the people who have done it sat down and figured out what the boards are supposed to look like and played with the notation for a while to get it right. Don't expect to get it overnight, but if you're familiar with chess, you'll probably be able to do it.
