Hello Lindsay.
I can certainly recommend some games, however also remember you can go to
www.audiogames.net and use the search archive function. If you search for
rpg games or muds you will find a good few online games, also remember the
games to play online page over at www.whitestick.co.uk.
there are several I'd personally recommend. Firstly with Muds there is
alteraeon which you know about.
There are then several brouser games. Firstly, core exiles over at
http://www.core-exiles.com/ this is a massive online space adventure rpg
game, with elements off stratogy and economics and some great background,
plus a very friendly community.
then, one game I am recently becoming quite the fan of is the online pokemon
like game puppet nightmares, see
http://www.puppetnightmares.com/index.php?sh=23512
(and yes, this is my referal link).
this is a very complex battle game in which you collect, breed and train
various spiritually controlled creatures called soul puppets. It's a complex
affair in it's battle and mechanics, but quite okay once you get the knack
(see the puppet nightmares entry on audigoames.net for details). it also has
a great and quite surreal story and over all pretty freaky atmosphere, very
nightmare like and weerd.
then, there is metroplexities, at http://www.metroplexity.com/ this is a
game similar to the popular kingdom of loathing or twilight heroes, though
for me metroplexities is superior sinse it has a far more complex battle
system that actually resembles a collectable card game, plus with it's theme
of a cyberpunk like world with big coorporations, crime and drugs that make
people see real illusions it's got a rather more serious atmosphere and
story than similar games which grabbed my interest far more.
then there is warriors 2 at http://www.warriors2.com/ this is is a game with
a very disticnt item creation system and a lot to explore. Battles aren't as
interesting, but on the plus side everything you find is unique, including
various companions who travel along side you and do everything from help you
in battle, to find healing herbs, or even cook for you! My only personal
problem with the game is that in game dungeons can be a bit daunting since
they are huge, and other than your coordinates you don't really get help
knowing what is in them, but that shouldn't put you off trying.
Then there is age of fable
http://www.apolitical.info/webgame/index.php?mode=0 I'm not sure whether
you'd call this a brouser online rpg game or a amebook, but either way it's
great fun. Simply choose or roll up a character, read the story and respond.
With colourfull writing, lots to do and explore, and even stats systems to
improve this is the recipe for a lot of fun.
There are of course many more online games that I have played, most of which
can be found on audiogames.net or whitestick, but the above are the ones
that have most recently grabbed my attention.
then, of course I'm a huge fan of gamebooks and the many online sites that
provide them, including http://www.arborell.com/ and
http://www.ffproject.com/ http://www.projectaon.org/new.htm and
http://www.chooseyourstory.com/
these are closer to interactive stories than gamebooks, but don't have the
parza interface of standard if, and many have rpg like mechanics. I'm a huge
fan.
hth.
all the best,
Dark.
