I wonder if there could be an option to gnt-node modify that brings the
number of candidates below the pool size (the converse of --auto-promote)
(and allow ganeti to temporarily live with lower pool size, while still
complaining at verify time and such). This would make it easier not to have
to change the pool size before doing such an operation.
