conflicts with waiting for a job

It seems that sometimes when we poll for a job, the job finishes and is
detected as dead using the job death detection mechanism (before inotify),
the polling query reports an error with None message.
(I still need to confirm exact cause, I'm filling the bug so that it
doesn't get forgotten and when it happens again, I'll update with more
details.)
