i forget to explain.. the gauge is a measurement that can go up or down 
(like a thermometer, tachometer, stock market).  the measurements are 
absolute values (temperature, rpms, capital).  counters are measurements 
that only go up (the number of packets sent/received).  rrdtool handles 
these two different types differently.

p.s. i guess the recent stock market is more like a "counter" since the 
amount of money investors are losing is only going up.  ouch.
