as an explanation of how the configuration file system works. the default config will work for many people. to see the default config run
% gmond -t ... default configuration output ...you can use this default config as a base for a custom config (maybe you don't want all metric reported or alter the time value thresholds etc).
% gmond -t > my_custom_config.conf
then you tweak my_custom_config.conf and then start up gmond with
% gmond -c my_custom_config.conf
