Anecdotally, I can say that the web frontend for trunk should work with 3.1.x I actually may even work with 3.0.x. This isn't really "supported" though.
Testing is pretty simple: just edit conf.php to point to you gmetad host:port. Since the web FE is essentially read-only with regards to the rest of Ganglia, I'm pretty sure you can't hurt anything.
