The time ranges ganglia collects for and displays (hour, day, week,
month, year) weren't the most useful, so I added some: 8 hours, 3 days.
It was easy to just add new items in get_context.php.
I changed the RRD config in gmetad.conf to support these new ranges:
RRAs "RRA:AVERAGE:0.5:1:240" "RRA:AVERAGE:0.5:8:240" \
"RRA:AVERAGE:0.5:24:240" "RRA:AVERAGE:0.5:72:240" \
"RRA:AVERAGE:0.5:168:240" "RRA:AVERAGE:0.5:672:240" \
"RRA:AVERAGE:0.5:5760:370"
That's great for new metrics, but doesn't affect metrics that already
existed before I made this change. For those, when I view 8 hours I'm
seeing the same resolution as for 1 day (24 pdps per row), and when I
view 3 days, it's using the week resolution (168 pdps per row).
If I delete a .rrd file, gmetad will create a new one with the new RRAs,
but I don't want to lose the history that's already in there.
I tried, as an experiment, using rrdtool resize to create a new RRD
out of one of the old ones, with more rows in the first two RRAs - not
ideal, because it would take up a lot more space then necessary, but
it would serve the purpose. However, when I tried putting that
resized file in place, gmetad barfed:
/usr/sbin/gmetad[29752]: RRD_update (filename...): can't handle RRD file
version 0003
Indeed, rrdtool info shows this file is version 0003 and the originals
created by gmetad are all version 0001. I don't know what that
actually means, and I'm using rrdtool on the same server where gmetad
is running which I would've thought means I'm using the same version
of RRD as it is.
So, this imperfect method isn't working, and it's not quite what I
want to do anyway.
What *is* a good way of adding the right data resolutions to my
existing metrics, to support the time ranges I want to view?
