If you have enough ram to hold the data, (depends on the number of metrics,
which depends on your OS, and whether or not you have custom metrics) you
can put gmetad on a ram based filesystem, such as tmpfs, and just rsync
the rrds to disk at regular intervals.  This should smooth out your gmetad 
performance considerably.
