Thanks Matt.

a) I tried the first suggestion and it worked the way I wanted it to. Thanks for that.

b) I did think of your second suggestion. but for that I would have had to make changes on the gmond.conf of every single machine in the cluster that I wanted to monitor ( right .. ?? )

that is why I wanted to check if t here was an easier way to do this .. ( laziness on a rainy day )

there are two way to go here.

1.) just make your webserver gmond "mute" by adding the line

mute on

to you /etc/gmond.conf file. when the gmond is mute is will stop talking on the multicast channel and will not appear in the list of hosts.

2.) don't run gmond locally but rather plug gmetad into a remote gmond. to do this change you /etc/gmetad.conf data source to point to the new remote machine. keep in mind that the remote machine will have to "trust" your web server. to do that.. add the following line to the remote machines /etc/gmond.conf

trusted_hosts <web server ip>

or if you are on a secure net

all_trusted on

will allow any host to get the info from gmond.

good luck!

Subject: [Ganglia-general] Gmetad

Hello.

Can I have only a gmetad running on my webserver and no gmond ?

I had both running on my webserver, but since it is not important that my webserver be monitored by a gmond, I tried to shut it off . Then I lost all communication with that particular farm. I want to keep the gmond on my webserver turned off.. How can I achieve this ?
