Hmm - check the filesystem.  Is /tmp writable?  Is /proc and/or /dev
mounted?  If you interrupt gdb, where's the backtrace?  I'm just guess
here.  Try strace-ing or ltrace-ing the process to see what it's doing
towards the end.
