This is similar to the status checks I do for our batch
scheduler system.  After I grab the status from the batch
system, I cache it.  That way it doesn't have to redo the
query.

I was assuming that the normal host ping (done
for the host check) would still be done by nagios.  I guess your
goal is to get rid of this.  So I would agree.  One
way to get around that is to used the distributed monitoring.
Nagios's distributed model (which I am partially using) is a horrible
hack from what I have seen.  Unfortunately, I haven't seen
any open source monitoring tools that are as feature rich as nagios
There are "indirect" methods under nagios that could possibly be
used, as well.  I think it uses some of the same framework as the distributed
model, but may require less duplication.
