gmetric is a tool to use to put metrics INTO the data stream, not pull it out. If you want to pull data out you might try installing the ganglia-python stuff. I don't know if this is available on MacOSX or not. Have you installed the web frontend on the system as well?
Another option for testing is to set the web front end and gmetad up on a Linux system to pull data from your MacOSX system.
