This is because of the way the gmond works. Internally the data for each
node is correlated with an IP address, not a hostname. When gmetad
queries the head gmond node, that head node does a reverse DNS lookup on
all the IP addresses to get the hostnames it will report back. My guess
is that either the reverse DNS lookup for this host is failing on all
nodes, or maybe only on the headnode that gmetad is querying. You can
confirm this by using tools like dig, ping and nslookup against the IP
address.

One of our servers is showing up on the Ganglia web page under it's IP
address instead of it's DNS name. It showed up under it's DNS name
until just recently when the system was restarted. We've seen this on
some of our other systems after restarts. These are RedHat 4 systems.
