Phil, Have you tried only having the gmond data going to one host instead of two, and removing the redundant node out of the gmetad.conf and restarting? That would at the very least tell you if it's a redundancy issue causing the problem. I have run into the something that sounds similar, and have since gone back to just one gmon data gatherer per cluster.
