I'm about to pull my hair out here. I'm not stupid,
I've been configuring computers for almost 40 years.
All I'm trying to do is run ganglia on one single
computer to get it to measure itself. It is
Linux on an i386 architecture, the ganglia RPMs install
with no difficulty, all of the rrds business is
installed, I've got the ganglia WEB business installed,
I've played with the gmond.conf and gmetad.conf files
until I'm blue in the face, and I'll be damned if I can
get the thing to report one single statistic about anything.
The WEB interface merely says:
Cannot find any metrics for selected cluster "garage", exiting.
Check ganglia XML tree (telnet 127.0.0.1 8652)

Guess what, I perform the recommended telnet to 8652 and
I get a fine XML return of what it can do. So then what ?

Nothing accumulates in /var/lib/ganglia/rrds/
the directory sits there empty. gmond and gmetad are running
just fine.

I note other queries like this in the email archives,
with lots and lots of recommendations to tweak this that and
the other thing. I'm over several hours on this thing so
far and I don't know why it does not work.

What exactly is one supposed to put in the gmond.conf
udp_send_channel and udp_recv_channel, their defaults
are mcast-join 239.2.11.71 which one "ganglia how-to"
document said must be altered to .72 in place of the .71

And then, in gmetad.conf, is it sufficient to
merely specify:

data_source "garage" 127.0.0.1

to get it to talk to the gmond at 127.0.0.1 ?

That's what I'm led to believe.

Still trying - Hiram
