Hi - when I downloaded the source for ganglia, the web page indicated
I should read the documentation.

Which webpage are you referring to?

Probably this one: http://www.ganglia.info/?page_id=48

It reads:
support requests
if you need support please follow these steps until your problem is resolved:

   1. completely read the documentation,
2. check the ganglia-general archive to see if other people have had the same problem,
   3. post your support request to the ganglia-general mailing list,
   4. check the ganglia-developers archive,
   5. post your question to the ganglia-developers list

Note item #1.

The manpages are currently the most up to date documentation. There
are some oldish docs available here (which also includes the man
pages):

http://www.ganglia.info/docs/

Except that there's no man page for gmetad, gmetad.conf, or gmond. There is one for gmond.conf--which is good since that's the most complicated.

The gmetad.conf file has a number of useful comments in it as well, and is somewhat self documenting.

What appears to be lacking as well (at least that I could find), are docs on setting up federated clusters, and actual usage cases for different configurations. I do realize that ganglia is configured to Just Work out of the box, and this is a very good thing. However, users who need to move beyond this and do something more complicated have very little documentation to fall back on.
