To solve the issue properly, we need to figure out whether Ganglia is interfacing with rrdtool using the most optimized way: i.e. can we do something about the number of rrd files Ganglia manipulates. Another way is to optimize the storage of rrds -- perhaps there are better methods of storing the rrds in such a way that no manual intervention is necessary to sync the rrds to/from tmpfs etc. There is also some work on the rrdtool end to accelerate things.
