Hi there,

Swapped memory indicates sections of memory that have been paged out
(swapped) of core and into disk. Essentially, a running system only has so
much room in physical memory (RAM) in which to run things; when the total
memory requirements of the tasks running on the system exceed the maximum
size of physical memory, the OS will write out sections of memory to disk
for applications that are sleeping in order to free up sections of RAM that
running applications need. It is essential that this process does not happen
too frequently, as the OS will spend too much time swapping memory and not
enough time running jobs, a condition known as 'thrashing'. If your system
has a tendency to trash, it's a good sign it needs more RAM.

There are ways to identify swapped memory, but the details vary by OS. The
'top' program will give you a realtime report of memory usage, including
swap; Ganglia also tracks this variable, and /proc/swaps on Linux will
provide info about swap as well.

hth,
Klaus
