Thank you very much for your help. Unfortunately, adding "# Required-Start:
      $network" to the INIT INFO did not solve my problem. I don't know why,
really. I wrote a small, stupid script to download and install ganglia (it's
for a cluster install) and something must be wrong somewhere. Actually, I
even got so far as copying the exact ganglia-monitor startup script from
these packages you mentioned into my custom installation script... and it
still won't work.

But now that you've pointed me to the binaries, I'll try installing them
(using dpkg) and changing only the configuration files. For some reason I
missed these binaries (and the experimental debian source package) when I
googled. Damned, I always take the harder way for some reason! :D

If the binaries work, then I'm off the hook here.
