I found the problem... I added an acl to my gmond.conf file based to
block a particular sender.  I had added a "bind" line of the form
bind = 227.240.50.18
(this address matches the mcast_join address).
I did this because it had been done on another machine.
Removing the "bind" line fixed my problem.

What does bind do?
