I have a few custom counter metrics that when restarted show a spike
so high on the ganglia we graphs that the metric is rendered useless
until enough time passes that the spike is outside of the time window.

My guess is that gmond reads in the counter values and derives a rate
so the first value when starting up is a large number when compared to
0 has a rate that dwarfs the proper rate of that metric.

I could detect in my module a restart by putting a time stamp at
__init__ time (Python module) and rate limit the counter metrics, but
this seems hacky and can turn my decently written code into a mess.

What do other people do for counter type metrics?
