RRDTool 1.4 includes RRDCacheD which would significantly improve your I/O performance if you are monitoring a lot of hosts/metrics. With an older version of gmetad, you should be able to manually integrate it with rrdcached. The full integration should be in trunk and will be released in the future as Ganglia 3.2.x.
