No overhauls were required - I just created an alias and it worked out of
box - not surprising as the web interface powered by PHP.

I think I found out the issue. The web-interface has another settings file
(symlinked to /etc/ganglia/ganglia.php) which points towards RRDS files. I
currently had simply sym-linked the RDDS directory to point from default
location, but probably will try to change via the settings.php file later
on.
