I'm not aware of any simple solution to this issue.  If it were me, I
would've started the patch off with trunk, and then backported to the
3.1 tree.  However, I would've encountered the same issue if there
were code offsets.

If Git could get around this issue, we should look at it more
seriously.  We have been discussing this on and off internally.  It
may be a good time to do the switch after we've released maintenance
releases from 3.0 and 3.1 branches.

Agreed.  And don't get me wrong, I (we) totally appreciate that you
took the initiative to even submit us a patch.  In my point of view,
since the user has already taken the initiative to submit a patch, he
might be able to take a step further and give us a patch which we
could commit straight into trunk.  It never hurts to ask, right? ;-)

We currently do not have many active developers, so anything that
makes it easier for us to review/commit code helps.  Hope you
understand.
