Hi all,
I've an important question for you.
I want to explore the "real" capabilities of Ganglia at the present time.
During my work with Ganglia I realized that a "very useful feature"
would be to manage RRD files information in a flexible way, simply
starting from a configuration file.
Suppose we have a single .conf file where we can set some parameter: for
example cluster names array, node range (eg. node[100-200]) of a certain
cluster and metric (es load).
This would result in a management tool which allows me to create an
visualize on a SINGLE WEB PAGE (like the ganglia one or different) the
information and partial sums for any cluster or group of cluster, and
for each cluster only for the node set I prefer.

1) For example suppose we have CLUSTER1/2/3 etc.

I want a web page where I can see only the graph of cluster 1 and 2 (not
3) and for cluster 1 only the fist 100 nodes.
Then I want to see on the same page also the partial sum for each
cluster or clusters group.
All should be done re-using the same data collected from gmonds/gmetad once.

At the moment the only way is to create a sub grid and maybe defining
custom views!?
for node subsets I need probably another gmond to activate.

It should be better to have a tool easily configurable with a single
file in order to create directories, also hierarchically, to store rrds
and partial results, without re-collecting values.

2) Another use case could it be to store info about application load,
storing for each application or user the proper rrds into separated folders.
Then create also the total sum graph.
How can we manage the information about entities like users or
applications without a general file management tool?

I don't know exactly if Ganglia can do that, if not it must be created a
different layer, as simple as possible, to manage RRDs with RRDTool into
folders and producing correct graphs.

This can be also a new development step, should it be possible? It has
been never proposed previously?

thanks in advance,

Best Regards,
Michele
