I think a lot can be accomplished towards making this more readily understandable by putting the information about the current category in a sidebar (I would prefer it to the right) and having the "meat" of the page next to it. A little bit of background and/or border changes would give a visual hint that the stuff off to the side serves a different purpose from the given links.
